Year 5

Welcome to the Spring Term. This term, the same members of staff will continue to support your child’s learning. We will also be joined by a student teacher, Ellie George, from Roehampton University.

Children will now take part in PE on Friday afternoons. Please provide your child with the appropriate clothing and footwear; children must wear trainers or plimsolls for health and safety reasons – they will not be able to participate if they do not bring a change of footwear. They will also need a complete change of clothes – including their t-shirt as well as shorts, tracksuits or leggings for girls. Children are advised to keep this kit at school. If they do not have the correct clothing, it can be purchased at the front office.

Year 5 will continue swimming lessons once a week, on a Tuesday afternoon, until spring half-term. Swimming is a compulsory subject, and children must bring their swimming kits each week.

Topics for Learning

In English, Year 5 will be focusing on non-fiction writing – including newspaper reports and persuasive writing. There will be a cross-curricular link to our science topic, which is Earth & Space. The focus in geography will be rivers. In mathematics, learning will focus on place value, multiplication & division and measurement. Then they will move on to studying geometry. Children will continue to learn Spanish with Sara Montero. Children will take part in religious education and PSHE. Both subjects will help them to develop empathy and understanding of one another’s beliefs and backgrounds.

Homework and Home Reading

Your child will be given homework each Friday. Please allow your child to complete this work independently. This way, we will be able to assess your child’s understanding more accurately. The homework book must be looked after and returned to school the following Wednesday for marking. The main focus will be on consolidating maths skills and reading comprehension.

Children in Year 5 must read every day as an integral part of their home study routine. Please encourage your child to take great care of any books that are borrowed from school. We also encourage you to become a member of a local library so that a wide range of books can be borrowed regularly and for free. A list of suitable books can be provided.

Punctuality and Absence

We strongly encourage your assistance in ensuring your child’s attendance each day – every day is fundamental to their progress. Please also ensure that your child arrives at school before 8:50am. Any children who arrive late must report to the Administration Office.

In the event of an absence, please advise the office as soon as possible (telephone number: 020 8743 5847). Family holidays must be planned outside of term times so that your child does not miss important content.

School Uniform

Please ensure your child is wearing the correct school uniform each day. This includes a white or purple top, a purple cardigan or sweatshirt, black/grey trousers or skirts. Girls also have the option of wearing the school’s dresses. It is important that children wear dark coloured shoes every day. Trainers and football boots are not considered to be suitable footwear but they may bring a pair to wear in the playground.
