DLD Awareness Day - Friday 17th October 2025

Y5 DLD

On Friday 17th October, our school proudly took part in Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day. we had a whole-school assembly led by Mr Reed, who spoke about what DLD is, how it can affect learners, and the ways we can all offer support.

In celebration of the day, the whole school dressed in yellow and purple – the official DLD awareness colours – creating a vibrant show of unity. Each class then enjoyed a range of activities designed to highlight the importance of communication, language and word-finding skills. These included barrier games, missing word stories, poster making with helpful tips to support DLD learners, speaking and listening challenges, and much more.

Reception had great fun with “Storytime with a Twist”. The children listened to the much-loved tale Handa’s Surprise – but with some of the key words missing! They enthusiastically filled in the blanks with their own words and actions, showing how creative and resourceful they can be with language.

It was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to build awareness, understanding and empathy while having fun together. We are proud to stand alongside the global community in raising awareness of DLD.
